Ms. Veronica Pikor - Kindergarten

Kindergarten at Buchanan Street Magnet is the foundation for the love of learning. School is a place to develop relationships and grow as a learner. In Kindergarten, basic rules of respect and consideration are taught and emphasized in all academic activities. New skills are developed and enhanced by integrating math, science and technology in all subject areas. There is also a strong focus on the fundamentals of reading.

First grade is a challenging and rewarding adventure that allows children to unlock the magic of reading and appreciate literature. My goal is to create life-long learners. I believe it is imperative that students construct their own knowledge of the meaning of mathematics by working through manipulative - based activities. The natural curiosity of first graders creates observant scientists who explore animal and plant adaptations, weather and states of matter. There is a strong focus on reading, which is integrated into all focus areas to engage our 21st century learners.

Third grade is a crucial year in which students learn in a supportive, print enriched, hands on, caring environment. They  learn to apply knowledge for fluent reading. Our daily reading comprehension packets allow students to learn about important events in history while practicing multiple comprehension skills. Students learn to express their ideas through class discussions and through the process of writing. Students learn to use various strategies to solve and explain concepts involving place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. They will measure, explore, and estimate geometric relationships and probability. In science, students are able to explore and investigate standards in physical, life, and earth science. All students experiment with research and use computers to self-publish their work.
